Elysse (front middle), Mabel (behind left), Juno (right), shown here in March 2016, are a few of more than 60 chimpanzees that live at Second Chance Chimpanzee Refuge Liberia, made up of six estuary islands, after being previously used in medical research. The Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International have provided emergency care to the animals since March 2015 and have also taken responsibility to provide high-quality, lifetime care to the chimpanzees, including basic care, veterinary care and new sanctuary facilities.
